Physical and Chemical Influences of Different Extraction Techniques for Essential Oil Recovery from <i>Citrus sinensis</i> Peels

The orange tree (Citrus sinensis) is a species of fruit shrubs the Rutaceae family. Essential oils from citrus peels are widely used in various agro-food and pharmaceutical preparations hence they must be recovered using green extraction methods. In this study, we compare efficiency five techniques (conventional hydro-distillation (HD), Salt-assisted by HD (S-HD), Ultrasound-assisted (US-HD), Enzymes-assisted (E-HD), Solvent-free microwave (SFME)) for essential oil Citrus sinensis peels. were compared with regard to their chemical compositions, light microscopy analysis, total energy consumption, antioxidant activity. GC/MS analysis allowed identification 28 compounds different oils. principal identified component was limonene (86.7 %, 87.9 88.2 88.3 85.4 % HD, S-HD, US-HD, E-HD, SFME, respectively), followed β-pinene, sabinene, linalool α-terpineol. obtained analyzed activity 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging method. Results indicated that extracted SFME showed highest (IC50 = 0.0175 mg/ml) yield (3.58 ± 0.05) consuming lower (0.312 kW h-1) shorter time (30 min) comparing other tested techniques. Hence, would an interesting method recovery C. useful agro-food, cosmetic, as alternative undesirable additives.
